We rescued a crimson rosella last year. he was terrified of us getting too near as he had been passed around different owners and had recently had his tail pulled out. now he sits on my shoulder or knee, takes food and (gently!) nibbles my nose but is still wary of hands and sudden movements. my advice, based on years of rescuing many animals and as a dog trainer, is not to be in a hurry; go at the bird's pace. let it gain trust in you and move towards you rather than you moving towards it. speak in a cheerful and confident tone; we chatter away to Brian all the time,I always tell him clearly the name of the food I am giving him and we have told him who we are so he now says "mummy" and "daddy" and knows which is which. he follows us around the flat and puts himself to bed at about 10pm; if not I tell him it's bedtime and he's there within minutes. he recently sat on top of the door watching fascinated as his daddy had a bath and eventually flew down to try to join in! many people have told us that rosellas can't be kept as pets but Brian, after having such a bad time at the hands of others, is just about the most perfect pet we could wish for! just remember not to be in a rush and it will happen in good time!
