Hi Steve,
I guess I am a bit biased, as I have a male Sengal (Zazoo). I was very careful in the selection of my first parrot. Senegals were at the top of my list because of many factors. One, they are quiet birds. They are not screamers. Zazoo whistles when he wants your attention. It is a whistle you or I would make. Not a shrilling whistle. He is 1 1/2. He said "step up" very early and has added four new words in the last week or so. When you put him to bed, he is quiet immediately. He wakes up when I am ready to get him up. I usually awaken him at around 6:30 A.M. Zazoo tends to gravitate to females. He has bonded with my wife, and tends to like females in general. Senegal breeders have said this is common. Male Senegals like female humans and female Senegals like male humans.
Senegal bites are not bad enough to penetrate the skin...at least mine doesn't. He does have a "get out of my face bite." You really don't see that too often. His appetite is excellent. He begs when our family eats, and we give him little treats.
Senegals are very smart. Ours is actually potty trained. He (if he can) will go to the bathroom on command. Then I hold him for 15-20 minutes, walk him over to his cage, and ask him to go the bathroom again...which he immediately does. I know other are able to do this with their birds. Zazoo knew immediately what I was asking him. He also does not go the bathroom in his carrier. He will wait until he gets to a cage.
Conures can be loud. That is why I stayed clear of them. I wanted a bird that could be in my classroom. The Senegal was a perfect choice. I would actually love to begin breeding them. They are a perfect bird.
I hope this has helped you learn a little more about the Senegal parrot.
Take care,
