Eggbound peahen -- causes, recovery, prevention

On thursday, I noticed my two year old white peahen had been acting
strangely. Although she appeared alert, she was sitting down strangely with
her legs and toes splayed in funny directions andher wings out to balance
her. I went into the pen and got real close to her, and although she figeted,
she didn't stand up or move. As soon as my father got home her took a look at
her, and called Dennis Erdman, who we had talked to about peafowl before. He
said the hen was showing symptoms of being eggbound, and told us how to treat
it.

My dad went back up to the aviary and brough the bird down to the house. When
he moved her he found an egg that had been directly under her. When we were
back at the house and in the light he flipped the bird over and tried to feel
around and find if there was another egg still stuck inside of her, but he
couldn't feel any pressure or an egg. We figured she had finally managed to
push the egg out herself, she she was directly on top of it.

However, she still cannot stand or walk. She seems to have gotten more
feeling and circulation back into her legs, becuase she can move them better
than before, and doesn't need her wings to balance, but yet she still is not
back to normal. How long does recovery normally take? Is there anything more
we can do for her?

Also, is a specific preventable reason this happened, or anything we could do
about it?
