Hi! My husband and I have a parrotlet and parakeet--and we're expecting our first baby (human, that is) in March. Here's the problem: The parrotlet, Pipsqueak, is quite demanding of our attention when he knows we're in the house, and, of course, he's used to getting it. When the baby comes, we know we won't have as much time for him, and we worry about how to deal with his demands.
We'd originally hoped that the Pipsqueak and the parakeet, Freddy, would get to be friends. They have separate cages, but they both have a lot of free time outside their cages, and they usually choose not to spend it together. Occasionally they'll hang out together--or quarrel--but it's not their usual thing. Pipsqueak would clearly rather be with us, and Freddy, who's shy, would rather be left alone.
Has anyone had success "forcing" two birds to get along? I'm thinking of buying a separate, larger cage and keeping them both in it, but I'm afraid I'll just wind up with two unhappy birds. I'm also thinking of boarding Pipsqueak out for the first three months after the baby comes so he won't drive me nuts. Any ideas?
