:We have decided to bring home a Hahn's Macaw. What size cage does he (?) need? Are there any special diet needs?
of course, get the largest cage you can afford and fit into your house. Your bird will be spending quite a bit of time in his cage during his life, and so you want a good large one. I would very strongly suggest wrought-iron, as they last much much longer than other cages (with the exception of stainless steel--the best cage option, but considerably more expensive.) For a han's, at the VERY least, your bird must have enough room to fully extend and flap his wings without coming into contact with cage bars, perches or toys. However, these dimensions would be the extreme. I would suggest a minimum of 24"long and 24"deep. The height for a smaller macaw is less important, but remember, more is always better. As for the diet, feed mostly a high quality pellet, with fruits and veggies, other bird-safe foods, and some seeds. Don't mess with vitamins until you get clearence from your avian vet. Good luck!
