Getting to know my new baby lovebird

I purchased a two month old masked lovebird last weekend and I absolutely adore him/her/It?
Anyway, the day I brought him home, I left him in his cage all day so he would begin to feel comfortable in his new environment. Later in the evening we shared our first bonding experience which went rather well.
He always freaks out (loud chirping and flapping and falling down and running away) when I first come to take him out to play, then he seems okay.
The first two or three days, we shared great times together once he was out of his cage. He was active and curious and ran up my shoulder and fluttered up to my head and even stepped from finger to finger a few times however, he has had some frightening moments when he flys out of my hand and falls down or when he ran under the couch and I had to get under there and take him out.
Now, whenever we're together he sits in my hand and doesn't move at all. My fear is that he associates me with fear and injury. Will he get over it?
