I have just had my fluffy bundle of joy euthanased two days ago after six wonderful years due to a mysterious paralysis of the legs. It started in the left leg , which I promptly went to my vet for X-rays , thinking it was broken , it wasn't! Within two hours it had spread two the right leg. I spent a sleepless 36hours nursing my baby but he became more and more lethargic and just slept in my hands or on my pillows. I returned to the vet the next day for more antibiotics but the condition was worsening and the vet was stumped as to why, so euthanasia seemed my only option. The vet felt the problem was systemic and possibly septacemia(blood poisoning?) as it was spreading through his system. My bird was primarily on a dry diet with fresh fruit and leafy vegetable supplements and always fresh water. He had been on this diet for approx six months with no ill effects. I have read of a paralysing form of lorikeet polio occuring recently in Australia's wild population. Also I believe to much dry diet can cause impaction which can cause a form of leg paralysis, I fear I may have acted to quickly, but I did this on the vets recommendation. As I live in New Zealand I don't see how a viral infection could have infected my bird unless through mosquitoes. Any information on leg paralysis would be much appreciated. Colin.
