I can only tell you that with time and effort, the bird will come around. We got our grey Sparky quite young and it immediately bonded with me - did not like my husband at all. Sparky would bite him, would not get on his hand, etc. But, over a period of years, he came to accept my husband.

How did he do it? He persisted. He would go to the cage and do things that the bird liked - whistling and dancing. Then he worked on getting him on his finger, and now can pet him. Your wife could take on the feeding duties so that the bird associates her with food. You might also go to the Harrison's bird food site - they give advice on bird training.
