::Hello Terrie,
::One thing you can do is feed your birds bugs, yes bugs. Bugs are very high in protein, I've read that you can feed soft bodied bugs, that your birds can over power from outside, but I don't trust that. And since it's winter,
::I suggest you go to your local petstore, buy maybe half a dozen large/adult crickets(You can buy more, but just in case your birds don't like them)then I say gutload them, put them in a margarine container, (or something like that), put them in a for a day or two, put fresh carrots, brocolli, , ect to the crickets... (Gutloadings great because your bird gets extra vitamins and minerlas from the crickets meal)NOw that the crickets are looking a little chunkier, freeze them for around a day, why is to kill all excess bacteria. Next day, take the frozen crickets, and wash them with water through a sieve, and dry them with a paper towel. When they've defrosted to room temperature , try handfeeding them to your birds.
::VOila, gross,...yes maybe, but it will give your bird good protien.
::Oh, ya then you can also just buy protein rich treats.

:I've never seen a parrot eat a cricket before, but that doesn't mean it hasn't happened. Most of the books and articles I have that do say to offer insects specify "commercially produced mealworms or insect larvae."
:I think for some of the small parrots a cricket would be too large to handle?
