:Hi!
:Just joined the board. Glad to have found it!
:I took my ringneck, winslow, and my grey, casper for checkups last week. They had bloodwork done. The bloodwork showed that winslow has a touch of low protein, and casper has a touch of low iron.
:For the iron, I've been giving greens. But, I am not sure what to do about the protein. the dr said it is a really small deficiency, but I would like to get it up to normal. I have no idea what foods would help. Unlike my grey, he doesn't like any kind of meat, and I think peanut butter would be too high in fat.
:Does anyone know what I can feed him in addition to his pelleted diet, that would allow him more protein? His diet is about 90% pellets, 5% seed mix, 5% people food.
:Thanks!
:Terrie
Hi Terrie, did your vet give you any suggestions on adding more protein?
Peanuts/peanutbutter is high in fat as well as protein. Have you thought of giving Winslow (I hope that's the right bird's name) a walnut and/or an almond each day? These nuts will help increase the protein (slightly) without all the fat of peanuts (junkfood).
Another option is to try offering sprouts. You can offer various type of sprouts such as seeds, grains and legumes. Sprouts require little or no energy to digest, and are highly valued vitamin, mineral, enzyme, and protein source.
Finally, other options are hard boiled egg (grind up and include the shell, boil for at least 20-30 minutes). Combinations of brown rice, enriched pasta, corn, nuts and various cooked beans.
