Fighting finches?

I used to have two zebra finches, both males. They were fine living together in a 24"x20"x20" cage for a few months. One morning I came up to them and found one of them dead and the other one looking very beat up (feathers pluck, little bit of blood from under its legs). The surviving finch is healthy now, but I am still wondering what the heck happened. If anyone has any idea please reply. Oh, and for my irresponsibility the food and water bowl were left empty for a whole day, could this have been the cause?
