hi,
have you thought about maybe a tarp or some "sheet plastic" as I call it(works tha same as a tarp just it's better at blocking the wind and it's see threw)
sheet plastic has to be out of reach for the ducks or atleast have no edges for them to tear cause they seem to like to eat it.. and play with it,
as for bedding, I use hay, I know people who use both shavings and saw dust, IMO shavings are better then saw dust, saw dust clumps together to easily, and would get matted very fast with 6 ducks
shavings are also more.. fluffy? and would make better bedding, although ducks do like to eat wood(at least mine do anyway) I forgot which type of shavings are safe and which aren't hopefully doug can help there(and correct me if I'm wrong about something)
I have 5 rouens in a coop bedded with hay, they eat it at night, the only down side to hay is like saw dust, hay clumps, after 2 night of 5 ducks sleeping on it the top layer needs changing(even if you kick it around before they get to it at night)
I have one rouen in his own coop and his hay stays clean(except for where he usually sleeps),
I guess it's really your choice on bedding
also if you want to let your ducks out during the day I say go for it
I live in NW Massachusetts it gets cold here and the ducks do fine, just keep an eye on them the only health problem (besides MAYBE a cold) is there feet freezing to the water or once wet ground,
I hope that helps!
and if there are any mistakes please correct me!
