they could very well be mix breed to I highly doubt they are mallard they could be a hybrid mallard/scovy which would most likely lead to mules(infertility)
they do sound like muscovies in a way
but they could also be Anconas(http://cyborganic.com/people/feathersite/Poultry/Ducks/Anc/BRKAnconaDuck.html)
possibly a Pekin cross(link to pure pekins http://cyborganic.com/people/feathersite/Poultry/Ducks/Pekins/BRKPekin.html)
maybe Appleyards(http://cyborganic.com/people/feathersite/Poultry/Ducks/Apple/BRKApple.html)

I'm sure there are more breeds out there that have dark brown colors,
