I have 2 large ducks and a very small fountain/pond (~250 gal). The ducks love to spend time in the pond but they foul the water considerably. A pump/filter package rated for a 500 gal koi pond plugged up every 12 hours or so and was a pain to clean. I've tried many things but what has worked best so far is a leaf skimmer made for a small swimming pool with a window screen lining, installed between the pump and filter.
The skimmer is about 3 quarts in size, has a plastic filter basket with about 1/8" holes, an easily removable but water tight clear screw on lid, and normally bolts to the intake of a pool pump. I installed 1" hose fittings on the inlet and outlet and lined the filter basket with window screen. The screen needs to be sown or otherwise attached to the basket to facilitate cleaning with a hose.
After installing the skimmer, the koi filter and skimmer basket only have to be cleaned about once a week.
It would have been easier to build an open top skimmer box with a removable window screen filter panel. The design of our fountain, however, required the skimmer be considerably lower than the outlet of the fountain. A pressurized system was therefore required.
For all the duck owners out there with similar problems, I hope this helps. If you have other solutions, please post.
Thanks
