Here is some possibly helpful general info from the GBWF list but calling a vet sounds like your first option to try.

Ron,

Sounds pretty nasty whatever it is. I’m always hesitant to offer a diagnosis over the internet, but I would say there is a pretty good chance that you are dealing with a Mycoplasma infection. Sulfadimethoxine is mainly a coccidiostat and not very effective against bacterial infections. I would get the bird started on an antibiotic effective against Mycoplasma ASAP. The antibiotic of choice would depend on your skill/comfort level of administering meds. My first choice would be Tylan (Tylosin) or Baytril (Enrofloxacin) injectible. Medication in the drinking water is the least effective method of getting the meds into the bird but is probably your best option if are not comfortable administering medications orally or IM (injection), or if you have a lot of birds to treat. If using water soluble meds, I would go with Tylan powder, Erythromycin, or Terramycin, in order of preference. Use the maximum dosage and continue treatment for the maximum recommended duration. Mix fresh solutions daily and make sure the bird is drinking. Clean the ulcerations with an antiseptic such as Chlorhexidine. If possible, provide some supplemental heat. Mycoplasma is highly infectious, so closely watch any birds exposed to this one. If the disease spreads to other birds, it would be wise to have a culture and sensitivity done so you will know exactly what you are dealing with, and the most effective treatment. If you have further questions, you can email me directly.
