Are my doves eating their seed???

We just got baby (can fly) mourning doves and we have seed in the cage in a container, but I haven't seen them eat any, however they drink the water. I read that they peck at seed from the ground, but how do we put seed on the floor of the cage w/o it getting poop on it?? Scared and don't know what to do. Don't want to be too late. Please help. thanks
