: I am caring for a baby mourning dove that fell from the nest. There were two, but one didn't survive. I tried putting them both back in the nest, but it was so cold that I didn't want to take a chance on the parents returning in time. Only one survived after I brought them in the house. I have been caring for the survivor for about 13 days now and it seems very undersized, but it is growing. My problem is I know I have to release it eventually but I just can't bring myself to do so. I have become very attached to "Sweetie Bird" and am afraid that it can't survive in the wild. What can I do? Someone with a similar experience please help. Thanks.

Any idea how old the chicks were when you found them? What kind of feathering did they have? If they were very young it just may be that this bird has bonded with you. Any possibility of keeping the bird? It would requre a fairly large cage, I expect. Can you get in touch with any place in yourarea that rehabilitates wild animals & birds?
If nothing else they could probably give you advice. Or your local SPCA might be able to refer you to someone or place that can help you out. I would think that you may be able to keep the bird if that's what you choose. It has not had the chance to learn basic survival skills from its' mother. It's true instincts play a very large part in these skills, but there are many animals that have to learn some of the basics from their parents (ie. getting food). Let us know how you make out! And best of luck!
