: My neighbor just rescued an all white dove that was sure to be killed by 3 cats. The dove was on the ground and could not seem to fly. I now have the dove living in my upstairs den (no cage). He(?) has been there a day and is eating some cracked corn. I know nothing about birds and need help. He seems very tame. He is now doing a little flying and actually tried to get out a closed window. How do I know if or when I should let the bird go. Anyway to tell if he was someone's pet or a wild bird who just got temporarily hurt and needs some time to recuperate? What should I be feeding him? Thanks for any help.
Can you tell if the bird really is tame or if it was just out of defenses or strength? You may want to place a classified ad in the lost & found ifyou want to find the owner - if there is one. I suggest that you cover the windows with a sheet or a sheer curtain to discourage he bird from flying into a window that could break his neck. Birds don't understand about glass! As for food, I expect you couldgo to a pet store and get a pigeon/dove seed blend. However I suspect that most any wild bird seed mix will also do the trick at least for the time being. Good luck and please post back to let usknow how you made out.
