Established birds can become very jealous of new birds and he would receive even less attention because you would have to give the new bird attention also. What I do when I am gone for the day is leave the radio playing classical music (softly) so my conure doesn't feel that he has been abandoned. Try the radio idea (as well as provide many puzzle toys (almonds in the shell are great)) and the bird should be happy.
