It's a shame because they're normally such a sweet twosome and inseparable. My question is...is there a certain time of the year that the beak & nails grow out quicker. If I take her right now just before spring time would I be wasting my money because she would grow out right after we got her trimmed? Should we wait until spring sets in? I seem to have remembered hearing something about that, but not sure. Just trying to be a "thrifty" but responsible pet owner :) Is that possible? haha Thanks for your replies.
Hi, I'm a owner of a greater sulfer crested too as well as an amazon. When I first bought my too I took him into my vet for nail trimming which began to become expensive as well as time consuming concidering how fast his nails seemed to grow. One day while watching my vet and his assistant cutting my too's nails my vet asked "Can't you do this yourself". You see my too doesn't generally like his nails cut and puts up a big struggle. So much so that it can be a struggle to isolate him so he can't bite. After having a long talk with my vet (who specialized in birds) and getting instructions on what to do and not to do I attempted this with my sisters help. This was 13yrs ago and I now do it by myself. Although my too is still not very happy about having his nails trimmed, once I get him wrapped in a towel so he can't move but in a way that he also can't bite me, he doesn't really put up a struggle anymore. He just chews on the towels edge until I'm done. My amazon has never been a problem. He doesn't like the process either but with him a towel never has been necessary since he doesn't bite. With proper instruction you should be able to do the same if your willing. As for beak trimming, my toos beak has never needed it so I don't have any advice but if it were me I would probably leave that chore to an expert since it seems it wouldn't be needed as often as nail trimming which in the case of my too is about every 4 to 6 weeks sometimes sooner.
