Hi, I can't speak for the McCaw, however I am the proud owner of a sweet umbrella cockatoo and can share from my experiences. I have also heard that cockatoos need alot of attention. However, in our experience, we got her when she was just weened. We talked with our breeder alot and she was very helpful. She told us that our bird would get use to whatever attention we gave her from the beginning. She advised that we not just shower her with attention at first because we may not always be able to provide it. Although we wanted to get her out of her cage constantly at first, we refrained and we're glad we took our breeder's advice. She stays in her cage most of the day, happily. We have never had a problem with her screaming, etc. from lack of attention. She usually gets out of the cage to play when the kids comes home from school. She's out sometimes for an hour, sometimes the rest of the evening. When WE decide she needs to go back in her cage, she happily goes. We make sure she has toys in her cage and change them alot. I really think if you get a baby and train it according to what you can (and will be able to continue to) give it, you'll be just fine with working during the days. If you're thinking of getting an older cockatoo from the classified or something, I would be concerned of what behaviors the bird may have and how much the bird expects to be out of the cage, etc. Although, I know of some who have adopted troubled birds and have done just fine with them. I would just advise that you ask lots of questions, talk to some cockatoo owners and breeders, look around the internet and learn as much as you can, then you'll be ready to make a good decision for all of you. Good luck!

:I'm considering getting my first bird. I am a reptile keep but I have been thinking of buying a macaw. Here is my situation...

:My wife and I both work fulltime and we have a small child. I understand that these birds need a lot of interaction and maybe we can't provide as much as a person who works from home could. I would consider buying 2 so they can keep each other company when we can't.

:What would be better for us to get? a Macaw or a Cockatoo? What are the pros and cons?

:Any advice would be appreciated.

:Thanks
