::My Wife just turned 30 and has been asking me to buy her a Too for a long time now. My boss at work had one and wanted to sell him so I bought him. He is 9 years old and very very friendly. The only problem I see is that his feathers are very ragged and bad looking. His head is perfect but the rest of the body is pretty bad and you can see his skin in some spots like his chest and wings. I was told that this is only because it is winter time and he doesn't get any baths in the winter so his feathers get nasty looking. He does bath his head in his water dish though and his head looks perfect. He doesn't appear to be plucking at all but he does clean his self a lot. Should I be worried? Should I bath him and blow dry him even though its winter?

::I was also told to use wood chips in the bottom of his cage, will this be ok? A local woman to ld me that it might harm the respitory system on the bird. Here is a pic of Bogee!

Welcome to you and Bogee.
Showers at least every other day and a good varied diet of pellets, fresh veggies, fruits and legumes will help the feathers. I happen to take my umbies into the shower with me or you can use a sray bottle to mist him.

The local woman is correct about the wood chips. Plain newspaper is the best cage liner, plus it is easier to view Bogee's poops. Poops often contain the first signs of illness, so they should be looked at every time you change the paper (no less than once a day). Materials like wood chips, corn cob, etc., will retain moisture providing an excellent breeding ground for fungus and other bacteria, often times being fatal to the bird.
