Well, I don't feel real "experienced" with birds and was waiting for someone else to respond, but this boards been pretty slow and it looks like I'm it for now. Congratulations on your new bird! I have a four year old umbrella. I give her a bath and blow her dry once a week all year around. We live in the midwest where it's pretty cold too. We've never had a problem. I do try to choose sunny days so we can position her t-stand after the bath where she can soak up some rays through the window. Our bird plays with my children all the time and gets into mischief. Normally I don't use shampoo, but one time I HAD to. We checked with the breeder and she said we could, just try not to get it all the way up to the skin and rinse thoroughly afterward. Well, I used conditioner afterward to keep from being so drying...and I guess I didn't rinse the conditioner out all the way. After blowing her dry, she looked just like your bird does in the picture. It looks like he has something on him. I would go ahead and put him in the shower, I'd sudse him up with a conditioning type shampoo, then rinse him very well and blow dry. I bet he'll come out fluffy clean. I hope I'm not giving you bad advice, but it's worked for us. Now, I shampoo every now and then and rinse very thoroughly and haven't had a problem. I'd love to see a pic after his bath. Good luck. Congratulations to your wife on her 30th birthday and her new bird. You must be a special hubby to get him for her too :)
God bless

::My Wife just turned 30 and has been asking me to buy her a Too for a long time now. My boss at work had one and wanted to sell him so I bought him. He is 9 years old and very very friendly. The only problem I see is that his feathers are very ragged and bad looking. His head is perfect but the rest of the body is pretty bad and you can see his skin in some spots like his chest and wings. I was told that this is only because it is winter time and he doesn't get any baths in the winter so his feathers get nasty looking. He does bath his head in his water dish though and his head looks perfect. He doesn't appear to be plucking at all but he does clean his self a lot. Should I be worried? Should I bath him and blow dry him even though its winter?

::I was also told to use wood chips in the bottom of his cage, will this be ok? A local woman to ld me that it might harm the respitory system on the bird. Here is a pic of Bogee!
