Thanks for your reply,
I have to agree with you and everybody else about U2s being cuddly, even thou I can't hold mine (Arnold) I can still reap the benefits of his loving nature if I stand close enought to the cage.
I think your advise sounds about right, I'll just have to take it slow.
Thanks again.

:Hello and congratulations! I'm not one of those experienced bird handlers, I am just the pet owner of a sweet 4 year old umbrella cockatoo that we've had since she was just weined. But from what I've seen with cockatoos, it is in their nature to want to be snuggled and held as much as possible. I've heard them called "velcro birds" for a good reason...they earned it :) My best guess would be to do whatever you can to make the bird feel secure with you and with his new surroundings. Then go one step at a time, very slowly and at his pace. You may try feeding him treats from your hand, then petting very slowly...mine loves to be petted under her wings and on her head under the feathers. Hopefully, he'll begin to enjoy your pettings and hand feedings, and soon will feel comfortable to come out and sit on your lap, etc. Also, there are some good behaviorists out there. You may be able to find them and contact them online. Have fun with him! I'm sure you'll have him snuggling up real soon :)

::Hello,
:: I have just become the new owner of a 12 year old Umbrella 2, so far the bird seems to have a wonderful temperament, the only problem I have with him is that his previous owners never held him much and he will not let anyone pick him up, when I try to pick him up he grips the cage with his feet and beak and will not let go. I do not think the bird is afraid of me, I think he is more worried about falling or something. I would very much like to hold the bird, any advise?
