:::How often do you all go have your cockatoo's nails trimmed?
:Do you use a regular large emory board that we would use or do you use a certain kind for birds? Did you start when they were babies? I think I might try it because it gets too expensive at the vets. I've tried using the dog nail trimmers on her once, but she went crazy and I didn't think it was a good idea to keep trying. The emory board might not be quite as scary to her though. Then do you take them to the vet for their beak? Thanks for the info :)
I aquired both my cockatoos when they were 7 and 9 years old (didn't get both at the same time). Ingrid had never used an emoroy board, but Angel had.
To show Ingrid that the boards weren't bad, I would file my nails near her and then do a couple of swipes on one of her nails. When she pulled away I would stop. At first it would take a week or more to get her nails done that way, but the more often I did them the faster she adjusted.
Ingrid had nutritional dificiencies before she came to me, so her beak grows crookedly. For her beak I use the dremel. She hates it, but it gets done faster that way. Angel chews so much wood that she has not needed her beak trimmed since she's been with me, nor had her previous owner needed to have her beak trimmed.
If they are chewing a variety of woods, cracking nuts, and doing a variety of other beak/shewing related things, they should not need their beaks trimmed very often if at all. As my vet likes to say, "there are no dremels in nature."
