Hi, Remy, the birdie genetics guru! :-)
Yes, I think you and Jonah are correct; she is a female. While Kane, my male, sings like my canaries in the next room, Evian peeps all through the "concert" rather than join in with more elaborate vocals. Jonah, my lovebird, does seem to possess an uncanny ability to sex birds, though. My housemate has a Meyers parrot baby that Jonah has declared a female. We'll see what the DNA test results come back as, but I bet Jonah is right (and less expensive. . . he works for cantaloupe seeds!). So, how DO birds seem to know visually what sex another bird is (obviously they know this when they pair up). What are the looking at? Maybe it's very subtle (for instance, my confirmed male lovebird, Jonah, seems to be smaller than female Peachface lovebirds and his head is slightly flatter). Could they perhaps be looking at details this seemingly insignificant? They don't seem to make too many errors on this regard. How do you think they know the difference?
Just curious,
Marci
