If you do not let your canary out of the cage, you just need to get a cage big enough to allow a little flying (at least 24" long). If you are lucky enough to find a young canary, they can be tamed fairly easily. Unfortunately male canaries don't start singing until they are adults so most of the canaries you see at pet stores are the adults. A tame canary can be handled like a parakeet, only they should never have their wings clipped.
Canaries form pair bonds during the breeding season but are solitary at other times of the year so a single canary kept alone will not be too lonely.
