Canary not singing

My mother's canary sang a lot when she got it early last year. It has not sung much in the last 6 months or so. She says it seems to be molting all the time, and they do not sing when they molt. Can anyone suggest what may be the problem. She is very disappointed that it is not singing. Any help would be appreciated. Also, she is thinking of getting another male canary. Can they be put in the same cage? Thanks in advance.
