Sometimes they're like toddlers who don't want to go to bed. Try putting a Nutriberry or other goodie in his cage cup right before you put him away.

It can help if we warn them and go slowly. He may have looked awake but been half asleep. It's also a good idea to teach him to step up onto a stick. Have you thought about clicker training him?
