I know that I would not get one for my birds. The good ones do have adequate ventilation, and they show mess more (which will motivate you to clean it more, so that's good in a way). The main thing I see wrong with them is that they make it much more difficult for a parrot to climb around and get adequate exercise. It also seems to me that it would be harder to attach most perches and toys. I suppose for birds that don't climb much, like finches or doves, or for parrots that are out most of the time, they might work out ok.
