Ask her if she knows about Pet Bird Report -- or Companion Bird Quarterly, whatever they are calling it now.
It's a great magazine for folks with the larger birds, and so many people there have been through adoptions of difficult and second-hand birds, lots of good information.
Sally Blanchard, who runs it, used to have an African Grey (Bongo Marie) who, through a combination of previous homes and some owners of dubiuos humor, used to swear a blue streak. She retrained the bird out of the swearing by using a drama reward for the bird, substituting a very loud and dramatic "Oh NO!" for swearing. THe bird loved it and that was what she then preferred to say.
My sister kept that in mind around her Grey, since they pick up all kinds of sounds and language, and as a result, Mariah says "Darn!!" with great feeling instead (like usually when she misses biting someone!).
