I have read many books that have paragraphs about finger training a parakeet, and all of them basically say the same thing: Start by putting a perch in the cage (you hold the perch), then keep repeating the process until your bird will get onto the perch and is not scared of it. After that, substitute your hand for the perch. When the bird comes onto your hand and does not seem scared, you can start slowly moving your hand out of the cage. Repeat until the bird is not at all scared and your bird will be finger trained. (Some books say to start with food or treats)
(a picture of him on his mirror is attatched)
My problem is that I started with putting my hand in the cage because I was not aware of how to finger tame a parakeet. He had a mirror with 2 perches attatched, one of each side. I think he feels safe when he is perched there because whenever I put my hand in the cage(while talking softly to him), he goes there, or wants to go there. I can get my hand close to him and touch the side of the perch where he is sitting next to, but only for a second because it swings and if I swing it, he gets scared.
I am afraid to try petting him because if he gets really scared and flys around the cage, I will probably have to start from step one. Should I go ahead and get closer to him, or just keep my hand where it is for a while. Also, should i keep my hand close to him where he can get onto it for about 5 or more minutes, hoping that he will get onto my hand?
Any help about this subject will help.
