:Hi all,
: Although I'm not new at pet birds, this is the first time I've ever had a budgie that lays eggs. I've searched some of the archives and didn't really find an answer. Our budge is an only budge, although not an only bird. What causes them to lay, and
:is there anything I can do so she'll stop? Aside from it must
:be painful for her, it's heartbreaking to take them away from
:her...
: Thanks for any help you can offer.

Female birds often lay eggs even though they are singles. Some folks have good luck slowing down the laying by shortening the daylight housrs that their birds have. Sometimes if you leave the eggs and allow the hen to sit on them, that will also help as they fulfil their instinct to lay and sit on the eggs. Leave the eggs until she abandons them on their own.

In the mean time, it is important that you provide the hen with plenty of calcium. The developing eggs use much of the calcium the hen stores in her body and it is important that you provide the calcium in their diet to replace that loss. You can do that by making sure that the bird has a cuddle bone and sprinkling powdered cuddle bone on their food.
