:I am a college student who will be moving into a house next year. This basically means I can finally get a bird. I have owned birds before, from breeding parakeets, to a cockateil, to a Quaker and a Blue Crowned Conure. I would like something bigger though, getting into the larger types, macaws, Greys, etc. I am not bothered by screaming, but if the walls are thin, my roommates may not be thrilled with something that is constantly loud
Zim, Greenwings are incredibly wonderful and awesome birds. However, they are amongst the loudest. Even if the noise will not bother you, it is enough to warrant an eviction, especially if other students cannot study because of the screaming. They can really shake the walls.
Our quaker is quite loud. Our 'tiel is relatively soft, as is our green-cheeked conure (pyrrhura species of conures are the quiet conures).
Grays are not notoriously loud, but can imitate noises to be annoying (like a microwave beep times 100, lol). Cute as a button, though, and smart as a whip. I grew up with a gray at my parent's house, and he was like my soul mate.
Amazons...well, there's a sensitive note with me. BOY can they scream. When they do, it sounds like a woman getting dismembered in your kitchen. It is pretty disturbing to hear. Be sure to read up on the "hot three" amazons, as they can be incredibly tempermental when hormonal (pit bulls in feathers).
Oh, and if you haven't heard it, you have to experience this site on cockatoo screaming. It's an amazing lesson to those who have never experieced the voices of large birds:

I also invite you to visit our webpage. At our Eduational Site (smart links) there are pages of sites organized by topic to help the bird owner learn more about their companion.
Good luck in your choice. Wisely chosen, you will have a very special companion for the next MANY MANY years. :)
