Do not use grit. In ALL birds it causes more problems than it "cures". Birds remove the seed hulls before consuming the seed, so grit is not nessesary. Also, sometimes grit can be made from oysters or other things from not-so-good conditions, making them potentially harmful for your bird. Birds should eat a diet of mostly pellets--this included parakeets too! Although they are harder to switch over, the rewards are very worth it! Oh, and stay away from the vets that told you grit was good.
