Parakeets do not need grit, although offering a small ammount of oyster shell grit occasionally will not harm them. The problem is that when parakeets are fed a nutritionally deficient diet like all seed, they may desperately eat a lot of grit to compensate for their diet's nutrtional deficiencies and the grit can become impacted.
