Teflon when heated will emit a toxic fume which is dangerous to humans as well as birds. The difference is that birds have a much more delicate breathing system than we do, thus they are more readily affected.

:(sounds silly, but I am serious ;-)
Personally, I have used cast iron for years, long before I even had birds. A well seasoned cast iron pan is much better than any non-stick coated pan I have ever tried. And they come in a multitude of sizes -- omlet to dutch oven. If there's an intruder, my 15" cast iron *skillet* will do some serious damage! ;-)
