Well, when it comes to birds there sometimes is never a single answer on who is right and wrong about handling a bird. But working with many birds I have seen several that bite when near their cage as a sense of protection. There was a double yellow amazon that ran you as you approached the cage to pick him up - then attacked you whenever you handled him. Once away he was fine. When a bird is given around to different homes, you being the 3rd - they want some security. Their cage is the only thing they sometimes feel safe in. I find the more he is off the cage and with you that will help, so you don't have the cage as an obstacle. Also, if he is on the cage it's an excellant time to play with him there that way he allows you by the cage and accepts its okay for you to be there too.
Just my experiences - hope that helps
:I just purchased a 1 1/2 year old male amazon from a lady who had to sell due to divorce. he is a sweet bird, but I am having trouble with his biting. He is better when away from his cage, but I play hell trying to get him away from his cage - he bites and hisses at me - I took him to the vet for a check over and he is fine in that respect. I have searched the internet and the library and it seems as if different sites and books have different answers -= If there is someone out there that has a yellow naped amazaon - I would be so grateful to have some advice.
